This process of becoming an author and illustrator has been one word: dreamy. I feel like I am in a dream because this is my life now. You know when you worked on something for so long and wanted it for so long? In reality, I did not know this could ever happen. If you would have asked me at any point in the past 25 years, my answer would be yes, I want to be an author some day. But how?
I think that is true for a lot of us, we can wish and dream and hope, but we just don’t know how to get there. It feels too big or too scary, or just too confusing. I was circling those thoughts for decades and I just could not see how to make it happen. Like a bird who has never flown has to jump one day, in August 2023, I jumped. Then I started telling people I jumped. I signed up for a class and told people. I took the modules and told people. I wrote some manuscripts and told people…eeek! And one person at a time, by telling others, my jump into this big world became something I heard myself say again and again. Step by step, my decades old dream flew into the world.
Often we have to borrow belief from others who are dreamers themselves…the cheerleaders in our lives. I think that is absolutely the thing that put me on this track. Telling others and then borrowing their belief that I could do it. So, for the dreamer that is tucked deeply inside of you…I say, JUMP!
