Author Visits are a wonderful way to encourage connection to literacy and draw students into the message of Marker and Lid.
“Having Jessie join our classroom virtually was an amazing experience for my students. She not only engaged them into the story of Marker and Lid, but she pushed them to think deeper about the story and apply the themes and ideas to their own lives. Between her expressive read-aloud, captivating questions and sweet stories, Jessie made a lasting impact on my 5th graders.” -JN
“As a teacher of 30+ years, I have read so many books. A lot say the same, but this book is different and really stood out to my class. They loved it and wanted to read it again and again! The author did a little talk with them and inspired some future writers. Please write another book!!” -MW
“The message of mindfulness, awareness and learning to appreciate our unique qualities is just beautiful. The mindfulness exercises in the back make this a perfect gift to foster moments of beauty and calm. Perfect for the start of a new semester!!” -PP
“We absolutely love meeting new authors! This book is a must for anyone with young children up to middle school. Marker and Lid teaches about self-esteem, emotions, and recognizing your own unique gifts and talents!” ML

Here’s an outline of what you can expect from an author visit:
Pre-K through 1st Grade: This author visit will include an interactive Q&A throughout the read aloud, a group song about how we are all very special, and a mini doodle session highlighting art techniques found within Marker and Lid, conversation and thoughts about how we all have important gifts to share with the world, and discussion about how we see the emotions change within the story.
2nd & 3rd Grade: This author visit will mimic the younger grades above, as well as include author secrets, story writing tips with writing prompts. We’ll dive deeper into our value and self-esteem, visualization for dreaming big dreams, and conversation about why we need others who are different than ourselves!
4th & 5th Grade: This author visit will include much of the content from the younger grades, as well as provide an inside look at the process of becoming an author/illustrator. Q&A will flow into our own experiences, the symbolism within Marker and Lid and how we can challenge ourselves to share our important gifts with the world.
